Are there customs and immigration facilities at Mafia Island, southern Tanzania?

No - but there is a solution. Look up Kanasi Lodge on Mafia Island and e-mail the owner - Peter. He has an agent who will get your name written in the police book and you can go to Chole to hang out. In fact - make the landfall over in Chole Bay and go overland to the customs guy who is very relaxed. He checked us in and then gave us a Transire dated the day we were leaving to facilitate getting past Immigration when we got to Dar. No problem. The US visa was USD$50 each. No other fees were collected here in Tanzania.
